A Few of my Favorite Things

Last night at 1:30am, I sat in a Whataburger with Jim and our good friend Varick. The conversation inevitably turned to a nostalgic rant on our favorite childhood cartoons. We reminisced about things like animation quality, plot, and character development. So I decided to ride the wave and put together a grid of my most favorite examples of animation.

These are the shows that, because of their style or story (or both), I keep drawing comics.

What would you include on your grid?

Have you ever heard the explicit version of “Home” by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros?

Thomas the Emo Kid

Trying my hand at re-drawing the old Thomas the Emo Kid comics, and attempting a real story line.

Thomas the Emo Kid is an ongoing comic about a high-schooler in Smalltown, Iowa who is the leader of the Emo group. If only he weren’t secretly a football fan, in love with a cheerleader, or had a crippling pants-ripping tick.

A few months ago I had the ABSOLUTE pleasure of collaborating with Little Brass Bird on their episode, “Black Forest Ham”. I’m such a big fan girl for their show, so when I was asked to be a guest artist, I completely freaked.

The freak out happened all over again when they interviewed me in their Featured Artist Blog for April. GLEEE!!

Another great night at The SketchUp with the crew! Of course…until everyone found out my horrible winking disability. And the childhood scars had just healed too. …

The weekly sketch group I have so much fun at recently got its name– the SketchUp! You can check out what we do on the facebook page, and if you live in the Jacksonville area– come grab a coffee and say hi. We’re there every Wednesday (except for artwalks) around 5:30 and be ready for some great sketching, good times, and pretty hilarious conversation.

THIS IS EXACTLY HOW IT WENT DOWN:

Last fall my good buddy Robin from our days at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago asked me to be the guest artist on her Little Brass Bird web show. I am such a big fan of their show and their sweet, offbeat humor. Check out their website here.

Robin sews all of the plush characters by hand and draws the sets, and Rhoderick does the voices and sound mixing. Together they write the episodes and it is so cute. Their show is all about bringing artists together – they find terrific musicians and creative people to be part of their show.

They asked me to draw the flashback in Episode 3 and I am stooooked! Watch it here ——> [link]
